Health District: Norovirus suspected in sickness at Las Vegas school

Las Vegas Sun - 2/6/2023

Feb. 6—Norovirus is suspected of causing a recent outbreak of gastrointestinal illness at Tanaka Elementary School, according to the Southern Nevada Health District.

The Health District is continuing to work with the Clark County School District on the investigation, officials said.

A final count of how many people were ill as a result of the outbreak has not been confirmed, officials said.

The outbreak was reported last week at the school in the southwest Las Vegas Valley.

The Health District reported today that preliminary lab results pointed to the highly contagious virus that spreads from person to person.

It can spread through direct contact with an infected person, by consuming contaminated food or water or touching contaminated surfaces, health officials said.

People exposed to norovirus will usually develop symptoms within 12 to 48 hours and most will recover within one to three days, officials said.

Common symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain. Symptoms can also include fever, headache and body aches.

The best way to protect against norovirus is by washing thoroughly washing hands with soap and water, health officials said.

Practicing proper hand hygiene is especially important after using the bathroom, changing a diaper and before eating, drinking, preparing or handling food, officials said.
