Dallas County reports 1,000 new coronavirus cases in a day for the first time

Jul. 3--Dallas County public health officials on Friday reported more than 1,000 new cases of the novel coronavirus, the first time the county has hit four digits in one day since the pandemic began.

There were 1,085 new reports of infections, Dallas County Health and Human Services said. The agency also reported six new deaths.

On Friday, Texas topped 8,000 daily cases for the first time, and Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order requiring face coverings in public in any county with more than 20 cases.

In total, there have been 23,675 cases in Dallas County, including 393 deaths. Forty-two of the deaths were reported this week, the most ever in one week.

"Remember that because it is taking up to 10 days to get back much of the test results, the situation we are seeing with the rise in positive cases is not what is happening today, but what was happening a week or more ago," Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins wrote on Twitter.

The deaths reported Friday were of three people in their 60s, two people in their 70s and a woman in her 90s, DCHHS said.

Dallas County has reported at least 300 cases every day since June 10.

Tarrant County authorities have said they will next release case and death information on Sunday because of the Fourth of July holiday.
