Twin Cities Marathon to be run virtually this year

Saint Paul Pioneer Press - 6/23/2020

Jun. 23--The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon will be run virtually this year, the organization announced Tuesday morning, as is the case for the entire weekend of events, including the 10-mile and the 10K.

The decision to skip the in-person events was made in consultation with Twin Cities in Motion medical directors, along with the guidance of public health officials amid coronavirus-related concerns.

In recent months, Twin Cities in Motion had hoped to be able to hold in-person events that would be safe for all involved, but recently determined that would not be possible.

"Twin Cities In Motion made this decision based on current Minnesota Department of Health restrictions that do not allow for public gatherings larger than either 25 or 250 persons (depending on venue)," the release said, "which are not expected to be loosened substantially between now and October."

The organization is transitioning its events to a virtual platform. Runners will have the month of October to run their races on their own. Racers will earn participant gear and finisher medals.

On its website, Twin Cities in Motion said it's "not feasible" to refund payments or offer deferments to 2021 events, but it will offer a partial credit toward a future event with the organization.

Registration open for the now-virtual events.

Twin Cities Marathon weekend originally was scheduled for Oct. 2-4. The event regularly draws 30,000 participants and 300,000 spectators.
