Boulder County reports 'surge' in new coronavirus cases Tuesday, no new deaths

Jun. 17--Boulder County Public Health officials said the county "is seeing a surge" of new coronavirus cases, with 34 new cases reported Tuesday. The number of deaths remained the same.

In a tweet Tuesday, Boulder County Public Health said the county has seen more than 80 cases reported in a week.

"It is still vital to stay at home as much as possible, wear masks when out, stay 6 feet apart, and wash your hands," the tweet read.

On Monday, Boulder County Public Health officials said a person who tested positive for the virus, reported being at a Black Lives Matter protest in Boulder's University Hill neighborhood on June 4.

Boulder County Public Health also reported Friday that there were 17 new cases reported in a three-day period last week. Some of the people who tested positive in that time frame said they were at a June 5Black Lives Matter protest organized by the University of Colorado Boulder coaches and athletes. Others in that group who tested positive said they attended parties on the Hill between May 25 and June 4. It was noted that in some of these cases, the patients reported ill household members and recent travel.

County health data also shows that age group with the highest number of positive or probable cases is residents between the ages of 20 and 29, with 242 cases. The age range with the second-highest number of infections is those between the ages of 40 and 49, with 172 cases.

To date, there have been 69 coronavirus-related deaths in Boulder County. There have been 1,100 people who have tested probable or positive for the virus. Of those, 174 people have been hospitalized and 503 people have recovered from the virus. There are 43 disease investigations in progress, according to Boulder County Public Health.

Boulder County Public Health also on Tuesday released updated data on cases in the county's cities. Longmont continues to have the highest rate of infection and most number of cases, compared to other municipalities. In Longmont, 499 people are considered probable or have tested positive for the virus. The city's rate of infection is roughly 519.8 per 100,000 people.

Lafayette has the second highest rate of infection at 335.1 per 100,000, according to county health data, with 97 people who have tested positive or who are considered a probable coronavirus case. Boulder, the county's most populous city, has the third highest rate of infection at 299.7 per 100,000, with 319 positive cases or people who are considered probable. Louisville has the fourth highest rate of infection, at 240.8 cases per 100,000 and 51 people considered probable or positive for the virus. Unincorporated Boulder County has an infection rate of 177.7 cases per 100,000 and 79 people considered a probable or positive case. Six people experiencing homelessness are considered probable or positive for the virus.

Statewide, there have been 29,442 positive or probable cases. There have been 1,617 deaths among cases and, of those, there have been 1,373 deaths directly attributed to the coronavirus. There have been 5,272 Coloradans hospitalized. Out of Colorado's more than 5.7 million population, 254,020 people have been tested.
