The quinoa comes with black beans and mango, but possibly listeria and/or salmonella

Miami Herald - 11/12/2018

Nov. 11--The salmonella and listeria at a McCain Foods facility in October continues to cause customer recalls, as Harvest Food Group recalled one lot of Path of Life All-Natural Southwest Quinoa this past week.

Publix announced the recall Thursday on its website.

To understand the elongated reach of McCain Foods' tentacles, know that this is the 25th precautionary recall in the past month connected to McCain'sColton, California, facility. Harvest Food Group's recall notice for the Southwest Quinoa -- which has black beans, mango and roasted corn -- stated flatly that salmonella and listeria definitely had been found at the plant.

"The Path of Life Southwest Quinoa contains an ingredient that Harvest Food Group sourced from McCain Foods USA's Colton Facility," the Publix-posted recall notice explains. "Harvest Food Group, Inc. has received no reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of this product to date."

The recalled lot is No. C081X7K30 with a Best By date of 11/30/2018. Anyone with these bags of quinoa should return them to the store of purchase. Do not use them. If partially used, toss the rest.

Listeria strikes 1,600 people each year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control, while salmonella hits 1.2 million. Both infections tend to strike hardest at children under 5, the elderly and people with damaged immune systems. Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Both are associated with fever, diarrhea, stomachaches and nausea.

The fatality rate is much higher for listeria, which averages killing 16.25 percent of those who get it, while only 1.9 percent of those who get salmonella even wind up in the hospital.
