Cargill ground beef products recalled for possible E. coli contamination

Sept. 21--About 133,000 pounds of ground beef produced by Cargill Meat Solutions is being recalled for possible E. coli contamination.

The Colorado-based company issued the recall Wednesday after an investigation by the Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service, the Centers for Disease Control and other public health partners determined the meat may have been responsible for multiple illnesses and one death in July.

Some consumers may have the products in their freezers.

Anyone who bought these products are urged not to eat them. They should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

People can become ill from two days to a week after exposure to E. coli and typically develop diarrhea and vomiting. Some illnesses last longer and can be more severe. Infection is usually diagnosed by test a stool sample.

The meat was shipped to retailers across the United States and packages have the establishment number "EST. 86R" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The ground beef items were produced and packaged on June 21 , 2018 .

All had a "use or freeze by date" of July 11.
