Safely dispose of toxic items at Tox-A-Way Day
Greensburg Daily News - 9/7/2017
Sept. 07--GREENSBURG -- The Decatur County Solid Waste Management District (DCSW) will host the county's annual Tox-A-Way Day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Decatur County Fairgrounds.
This annual day offers the residents of Decatur County to safely dispose of a variety of toxic items that cannot be put with regular trash. Tox-A-Way Day is open only to the county's residents. DCSW will not accept any items from businesses.
A wide variety of toxic items that would be harmful to the environment if improperly disposed of will be accepted. A list of items is available at www.decaturcountysolidwaste.com. Anyone with questions about a toxic or potentially toxic item and their ability to dispose of it at Tox-A-Way Day should contact DCSW at 812-663-0960.
"Unfortunately, not everything can be thrown away or recycled in your recycling bin," said Brittani Saunders, DCSW Executive Director. "This is a way to get rid of those toxic items. Without Tox-A-Way Day, those items can end up in our waterways and in the ground, just everywhere. By holding this day, we are giving people a way to get rid of these things properly and safely."
Saunders said there is no fee to dispose of items at Tox-A-Way, and there are no set limits as to the number of items that will be accepted, provided that none of the items come from a business. Everyone bringing items to Tox-A-Way Day must fill out a brief certification form to verify Decatur County residence.
"I think it's a good thing for people to utilize," Saunders said. "It's free and it's a safe way to dispose. Our biggest goal is to get rid of the stuff so it doesn't end up in our landfills."
The next special recycling event will be a Shredding and Electronics Recycling Day on Nov. 11 at the fairgrounds.
DCSW recently switched from the smaller recycling bins across the city to the larger 95-gallon carts, most of which have now been delivered. Recycling carts will be picked up every other week, starting this week. The smaller 18-gallon bins will no longer be collected. The carts can still be ordered by calling DCSW.
