Temperatures hit the 90s

HUNTINGTON - Temperatures climbed into the 90s Wednesday in Huntington, sending many to cool off at area pools.

For those who caught themselves thinking it felt much hotter, don't worry. You're not alone.

Due to the rise of moisture and humidity in the air, Mike Kistner, a Charleston meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said outside temperatures felt much hotter than 90 degrees.

"It feels a lot hotter than it is because what happens is that when you sweat, the sweat doesn't evaporate off your skin due to the heat and humidity, so your body doesn't cool down as efficiently," Kistner said.

To stay safe during this summer heat, Kistner said people who choose to be outside should take breaks more frequently and drink lots of fluids.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends that people dress in loose, light clothing, schedule outdoor activities in the morning and evening hours, use sunscreen with at least SPF 15, never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car, even with the windows cracked open, and avoid hot and heavy meals.

While Thursday is expected to give little relief, with highs in the 90s again, Kistner said things will cool down Friday due to a predicted round of showers and thunderstorms.

Going into the weekend, Kistner said the weather is expected to be beautiful, with temperatures in the low 80s.
