Area grocers free of beef franks recalled by John Morrell

The Daily Nonpareil - 5/24/2017

Council Bluffs grocery stores apparently did not receive beef franks being recalled by John Morrell and Co.

The Cincinnati, Ohio establishment is recalling about 210,606 pounds of hot dog products produced on Jan. 26 that may be contaminated with extraneous materials - specifically, metal - the U.S. Department of Agriculture'sFood Safety and Inspection Service announced in a press release Friday.

This is a Class II recall, meaning there is a remote possibility of adverse health consequences from use of the product, the press release stated.

Products being recalled include the following:

?14 oz. sealed film packages of "Nathan's Skinless 8 Beef Franks," with a "Use By" date of Aug. 19, 2017.

?16 oz. sealed film packages of "Curtis Beef Master Beef Franks," with a "Use By" date of June 15, 2017.

The products should have establishment number "EST. 296" on the side of the package. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

However, Council Bluffs grocery stores contacted Tuesday had not received the products named in the recall.

"We didn't have any affected by the recall," said Mitch Streit, director of the Hy-Vee Food Store at 1745 Madison Ave. "We get a lot of recalls. If we've got any of the products, we pull them off the shelves."

Jason Smith, meat manager at Super Saver, said the store had received some Nathan's Franks with an expiration date of Aug. 15, 2017, which would have been from a different batch, and did not receive any Curtis Beef Master franks.

Mike Sprecher, meat manager at Fareway, said the store did not receive any of the products being recalled.

The problem was discovered after Morrell received three complaints of metal objects in the beef frank packages, the press release stated.

The company notified the Food Safety and Inspection Service Friday.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions or injury from consumption of the products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a health care provider.

The FSIS warned consumers who have purchased the products not to consume them. The products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase, it said.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
