Sushi sold at 7-Eleven, Trader Joe’s, other stores recalled

Patriot-News - 12/4/2019

Ready-to-eat sushi, salads and spring rolls made by Fuji Food Products, Inc. and sold in 31 states – including Pennsylvania – is being recalled over possible listeria contamination.

The products covered in the voluntary recall were sold at stores, including 7-Eleven, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Food Lion and Giant Eagle Supermarkets, according to a notice from the Food and Drug Administration.

A routine FDA inspection of Fuji’s Brockton, Mass., facility revealed the issue, the agency said last week. Fuji stopped producing and distributing their products at the facility as officials continue an investigation.

"As responsible processors of safe, fresh food for nearly 30 years, we are addressing this problem vigorously and we apologize to those who are affected by it,” Fuji Food Products CEO Farrell Hirsch said in a statement. “We will restart operation only after we have eliminated the cause and the FDA certifies that our facility is once again free of possible contamination.”

There were no immediate reports of anyone becoming sick from the recalled items.

According to the FDA, the products were sold in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

They were sold at 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Food Lion, Hannaford, Trader Joe’s, Giant Eagle Supermarkets, Porkys, Bozzutos, Supreme Lobster and Superior Foods.

A listing of the recalled products was posted on the FDA website.

Listeria symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea as well possibly serious infections.
