Voluntary avocado recall in six states due to possible listeria contamination

The New York Daily News - 3/25/2019

March 25-- Mar. 25--Henry Avocado Corporation has released a recall of two of its products -- California-grown conventional and organic avocados -- for customers in six states for possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The voluntary recall was issued Saturday "out of an abundance of caution due to positive test results on environmental samples, taken during a routine government inspection at its California packing facility," the company said in a press release.

The avocados were distributed in Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin, and all shipments are subject to the recall. The company says it has contacted all affected customers saying that products should be immediately removed from store shelves.

Consumers can identify the California-grown conventional avocados by the "Bravocado" stickers. The organic products do not carry the "Bravocado" label on the sticker, but instead are labeled "organic" and include "California" on the sticker. Retailers can identify Henry Avocado organic products by the bar code on the stickers.

Avocados imported from Mexico and distributed by Henry Avocado are not subject to the recall and may continue to be sold and consumed.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Among pregnant women contamination could cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea,

Henry Avocados says there have been no reported illnesses associated with this recall.
